"Genoemd naar een 15e eeuwse Nederlandse moraliteit (allegorisch spel), waarvan de volledige titel luidt: 'Den Spyeghel der Salicheyt van Elckerlyc - Hoe dat elckerlyc mensche wert ghedaecht Gode rekeninghe te doen '. In het stuk zendt God de Dood uit om Elckerlyc, 'iedereen', met name de zondige mens, te waarschuwen dat hij een 'pelgrimagie' moet ondernemen, waarvan niemand kan terugkeren. Het stuk herinnert daarmee aan het uur van de dood en omvat dus een opvoedkundige boodschap (vandaar de titel 'Spiegel'). De schrijver is niet bekend. Het stuk wordt toegeschreven aan Peter van Diest (1454 - 1507), maar ook aan Petrus Dorlandus (1451 - 1507). Elckerlyc was in de middeleeuwen een bijzonder populair en succesvol theaterstuk."@nl |
