"Genoemd naar Raoul Gustav Wallenberg (1912 - 1947?), een Zweedse diplomaat tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Wallenberg werd in juli 1944 naar de Zweedse ambassade in Boedapest gestuurd. Door het bouwen van schuilwoningen en het verstrekken van (nagemaakte) Zweedse paspoorten heeft hij mogelijk 100.000 Hongaarse joden van de dood gered. In januari 1945 werd Wallenberg door de Sovjets gevangen genomen omdat hij werd verdacht van spionage. In 1957 maakte de Sovjet-Unie bekend dat Wallenberg in 1947 was gestorven aan een hartaanval in de Loebjanka-gevangenis in Moskou. Men sluit echter niet uit dat Wallenberg is geëxecuteerd. In 1991 werd een Russisch-Zweedse commissie ingesteld om Wallenbergs dood te onderzoeken. De commissie heeft niet kunnen vaststellen dat Wallenberg in 1947 is overleden."@nl |
