"Genoemd naar walmolen, een zeer hoge, stenen stellingmolen, die hoog uitsteekt boven de omringende gebouwen. Walmolens zijn op of tegen de wallen van een ommuurde stad gebouwd. Hierdoor had een molen vrije windvang. De stadsmolens werden meestal door het stadsbestuur bij opbod aan de meest biedende molenaar verpacht, waarbij deze zich verplichtte om de 'belasting op het gemaal' voor het stadsbestuur te innen en af te dragen. Daarnaast had de molenaar 'scheprecht', het recht om als maalloon een deel van het meel voor eigen gebruik achter te houden. Gouda kende verscheidene walmolens, waarvan alleen 't Slot aan de Nieuwe Veer-stal en De Roode Leeuw aan de Vest nog bestaan. De molen 'De Korenblo(e)m' aan de Verlorenkost is in 1969 afgebrand; de molen 'De Noord' bij de Kleiwegspoort is in 1863 afgebroken."@nl |
