De oorsprong van de marathon ligt in het jaar 490 voor Chr., toen de Grieken bij de stad Marathon een veel groter Perzisch leger versloegen. De Griekse soldaat Phidippides snelde van Marathon naar Athene om het nieuws van de overwinning te melden. Volgens een legende had deze eerste marathon een dodelijke afloop: na het uitbrengen van de woorden 'Verheug u, wij hebben gewonnen!', viel Phidippides dood neer als gevolg van een zonnesteek. De afstand van 42,195 km. is voor het eerst gelopen tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Londen in 1908 en is te danken aan het Britse koningshuis: er werd gestart op het terrein voor Windsor Castle en de finishlijn lag voor de koninklijke tribune in het White City Stadion in West-Londen."@nl |
