"Genoemd naar Jean Henri Dunant (1828 - 1910), een Zwitserse bankier en oprichter van het Rode Kruis. Tijdens een zakenreis in 1859 was hij getuige van een veldslag tussen het Franse en het Oostenrijkse leger bij het Italiaanse plaatsje Solferino. Na deze veldslag lagen meer dan 38.000 mannen gewond, stervend of dood op het slagveld. Dunant richtte met hulp van Italiaanse vrouwen hulpposten in voor gewonden van beide partijen. In het boek 'Een herinnering aan Solferino' beschreef hij het idee om in de toekomst een neutrale organisatie op te richten, die de gewonden verzorgde als er oorlog was. Vervolgens reisde hij door Europa om zijn ideeën te promoten. Dit leidde uiteindelijk tot de oprichting van het Rode Kruis in 1863. In 1901 kreeg Dunant de allereerste Nobelprijs voor de Vrede uitgereik."@nl |
