"Genoemd naar Leopold graaf van Limburg Stirum (1758 - 1840), een Nederlandse militair en politicus. Na een militaire loopbaan werd hij in 1782 rentmeester van de stad en de Meyerij van 's-Hertogenbosch. Later vestigde hij zich in Den Haag, waar hij in 1813 met Van Hogendorp en Van der Duyn van Maasdam het Driemanschap of 'Voorlopig Bewind' vormde. Als tijdelijk commissaris-generaal (minister) van Oorlog moest hij de openbare orde handhaven bij het vertrek van de Franse troepen uit de Nederlanden. Hij was het die op 30 november 1813 de erfprins, de latere koning Willem I, in Scheveningen verwelkomde, die hem later benoemde tot gouverneur van de residentie. In 1814 werd hij lid van Provinciale Staten, in 1828 kreeg hij de rang van generaal der infanterie en van 1833 tot zijn overlijden was hij lid van de Eerste Kamer."@nl |
