"Genoemd naar de oude bedrijfspanden van de voormalige plateelfabriek ‘Zuid-Holland’ aan de Raam, waar tot in de tweede helft van de twintigste eeuw het wereldwijd vermaarde, handbeschilderde Gouds plateel vandaan kwam. Zie ook Plazuidplein. Plateel is een bepaald soort aardewerk, waarop een motief met de hand door een plateelschilder wordt geschilderd voordat het voor de tweede keer wordt gebakken. Het woord plateel is afgeleid van het oud-Franse woord platel, dat ‘platte schotel’ betekent. Vanaf de zeventiende eeuw is het de benaming voor al het beschilderde Hollandse aardewerk, ter onderscheiding van het Chinese porselein. Tegenwoordig wordt het woord plateel gebruikt voor al het poreuze aardewerk, gevormd in mallen, al dan niet beschilderd en voorzien van een laagje glazuur."@nl |
