Abel Tasmanlaan
Tasman voer in dienst van de VOC, hij had ook in Batavia een functie binnen het hoogste gerechtshof van de VOC. Van zijn expeditie naar Australië/ Tasmanië/Nieuw-Zeeland hield hij een dagboek bij waaruit blijkt dat hij de oorspronkelijke bewoners die hij ontmoette als "primitief" zag. Uit zijn dagboek is een geweldsincident bekend in Nieuw-Zeeland met de Maori (het geweld kwam overigens van de kant van de lokale bevolking).

Tasman begon zijn zeemanscarrière in dienst van de Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie als scheepsmaat, later kreeg hij het commando over meerdere schepen. In 1642 - 1643 leidde hij een expeditie naar het legendarische Zuidland (Terra Australis), waarbij hij als eerste Europeaan om Australië zeilde en Tasmanië en Nieuw-Zeeland ontdekte. Na een tweede expeditie in 1644 kreeg hij in Batavia een functie binnen het hoogste gerechtshof van de VOC. In 1648 ondernam hij een mislukte poging om de Spaanse zilvervloot te onderscheppen.
