"Genoemd naar uit het raadsbesluit en het voorstel dat daartoe aan de raad is gedaan blijkt dat de straat is genoemd naar Pieter Cornelisz. Both, een 17e eeuwse Goudse dichter die omstreeks 1625 'Prins' (voorzitter) van de Goudse 'Camer van Rhetorica de Gouds-blom' zou zijn geweest. Later historisch onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat er nooit een rederijker P.C. Both heeft bestaan die 'Prins' is geweest van 'De Goudsbloem'. Bovendien was de titel van de voorzitter niet 'Prins' maar 'Keizer'. Er was wel een 'Keizer' van 'De Goudsbloem' met de naam Goossen Cornelisz. Both. Het lijkt er op dat de Goudse raad zich in 1903 heeft vergist. Er is wel gesuggereerd dat de naamgeving een verhuld eerbetoon is aan de familie Both van de witlofkwekerij NiBo, vanuit de gedachte dat de straat zou zijn aangelegd op gronden van de kwekerij. Ook dit is een misverstand. Tuinder Nicolaas Both startte zijn witlofkwekerij pas na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, daartoe geïnspireerd door kwekers onder de Belgische vluchtelingen die tijdens de oorlog in Gouda verbleven."@nl |
