De naam keen is mogelijk afgeleid van het Duitse Kahn of Kähn, wat de algemene aanduiding voor een schuit is. Door de lange smalle vorm en en lichte bouw kon het met de stroom mee afzakken en stroomopwaarts worden gesleept. De keen kon zwaar worden getuigd om tegenstrooms van elk zuchtje wind te kunnen profiteren. Kenmerkend voor een keen, ook wel bovenlander of overlander genoemd, was het grote klaphekken roer, dat bij kanaalvaart in korte sluizen door een speciale constructie kon worden samengeklapt."@nl |
