schema:text An alphabet (omitting J, U, W) of letters formed from human or mythological figures, in a range of postures and activities, sometimes fantastical (three satyrs leaning on staves: M), sometimes mundane (a servant bearing a fish on a salver: E). In the margins of each are facial elements and other parts of the body intended as models for drawing; above most letters is an animal or bird whose name begins with the letter. Each plate is accompanied by a rhymed tercet below the margin. The preface, “A suoi scolari,” is enframed by drawing tools: pens of various types with an ink bottle, a straight-edge, and a compass. “E il capolavoro del Mitelli” (Bonacini).
