schema:text In the restoration of polychrome works (paintings, wooden sculptures, frescoes, but also works on paper, ceramics...) synthetic materials have largely replaced substances with similar properties, but of natural origin. It therefore becomes essential for the restorer to understand the fundamental properties of these materials that have too often been used improperly. The discourse is complicated by the fact that these materials are of recent development and that there are cases of aging of about fifty years at the most. The study of these materials is made even more difficult by the fact that most of the currently used formulations were originally developed for completely different applications from the restoration of cultural heritage, and that rarely all components are declared.
