schema:abstract ""Since its earliest beginnings in antiquity, ink painting has been the paradigmatic vehicle for the visual expression of Chinese philosophy and aesthetics. After the invention of paper in the first century, and throughout two thousand years of history, ink painting continually developed new modes of expression using the quintessential Chinese media of ink, brush and xuan paper. In the course of this development, features of other kinds of fine arts--both domestic and foreign--were adapted and absorbed. Although this process transformed ink painting, it always retained its unique qualities whose essence can properly be called an outstanding cultural feature. Ink painting is an important and distinct form of visual expression whose origins lie in Chinese tradition, and it coexists today with other fine arts traditions Eastern and Western as an authentic and distinct mode of visual expression. The mission of the International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen is the presentation of an assembly of contemporary works by artists from China and elsewhere who, by exploring new concepts, are enriching ink painting's spiritual heritage. It is conceived as a joint program together with the Shenzhen Forum for Ink Painting held in alternate years. The Forum invites historians and critics of fine art to discuss the history and continuing development of ink painting, and by doing so, it provides a stimulus to, interacts with and promotes a new flowering. Since its initiation sixteen years ago, there has been five ink painting exhibitions two International Ink Painting exhibitions (held in 1988, 1992) and three International Ink Painting Biennials of Shenzhen (held in 1998, 2000 and 2002). [...] Contemporary ink painting continues the extra-ordinary innovation that occurred in the twentieth century, reforming, enlarging and enhancing the classical Chinese heritance, fulfilling its historical function by reflecting changes and evolution in society. It is doing this while focusing on its own tradition as a significant and valid medium of oriental culture. [...] Reflecting developments seen in the previous three biennials and heralding emerging trends in ink painting, the fourth biennial seeks to display a broad range of innovations and developments in contemporary ink painting. [...] The 4th International Ink Painting Biennial of Shenzhen will be composed of five exhibition units, including Ink Painting: Design; Ink Painting: Contemporary Brushwork; Ink Painting: Space; Ink Painting: the Metropolis and Ink Painting: Contemporary Korea."-- Preface of introductory volume."@en
