| schema:abstract | ""This monumental art-history [...] has its accent unmistakenly on the plastic arts. It is indeed primarily to painting and miniature, to architecture and sculpture and to the various branches of the applied arts--furniture, textile, wrought ironwork and gold- and silversmithery--that Flanders owes its world-wide reputation. This has not precluded the fact that ample attention has been devoted to the other expressions of culture and in particular to the liberal arts--these are after all the breeding-ground for creative-artistic forces--in each case with due regard to the political, social and economic aspects. The many connotations of the term 'Flemish' are elucidated in a special chapter. A broad historical outline is, by way of 'introduction', devoted to picturing the background against which the developments of art in Flanders have to be viewed. Afterwards, four chapters are devoted to plastic arts during the Middle Ages, the 16th century, the 17th and 18th centuries and the 19th and 20th centuries respectively. Each chapter is preceded by a short survey of historical events during the period in question, in particular of the intellectual history and the non-plastic expressions of art. The choice of the very rich and varied illustrative material--the most complete ever compiled in a book about Flemish Art--has not been confined to works of art kept in Flanders only, but reflects the diffusion of Flemish art throughout the world."-- Preface (page 7)."@en |
