"A new book edition will be published by Desiderata on April 19, 2024. On that day it is 200 years ago that the English poet Lord Byron succumbed to a fever in Greece. Byron stayed in Greece to contribute to the war of liberation against the Turks. His death sent shock waves through Europe. Dozens of poems lamenting his death were published in a short time. But the influence of his life and work extended beyond poetry. In the edition of Desiderata, 'Whatever I once was, now I am classical', detailed attention is paid to the influence of Lord Byron's death on the arts, both in words and in images. Ronald de Leeuw, former director of the Rijksmuseum, offers a unique overview of how the themes in Byron's work served as inspiration for the greatest artists of the nineteenth century: poets, composers, sculptors, and especially painters and graphic artists. The book contains 100 illustrations of works produced after April 1824. With the publication of this book, the poet is brought back to life. Byron's oeuvre is still of great importance and offers great reading pleasure.
