schema:abstract ""This study is the fruit of a long and often interrupted study of Ghiberti's three commentaries on art. Its original purpose was to present a critical English translation of Ghiberti's second commentary and to bring the notes in Julis van Schlosser's foundational work of 1912 into accordance with later discoveries and criticism. It was soon realized, however, that the second commentary, although able to stand on its own as a fundamental source for the history of Italian sculpture and painting of the late Duecento and Trecento and for Ghiberti's work, could not be fully understood without being considered in the context of the book as a whole. The dissertation was revised and expanded but remained incomplete.
