| "Twenty-one papers explore cultural, scientific, missionary, economic, and migration contacts between Holland and Belgium, and China. Two contributions discuss issues related to Jesuit missionary and scientist Ferdinand Verbiest's travels to China in the late 1600s, including a comparison of his account to parallel Chinese sources. Other papers looks at the religious, scientific, and political activities the China Mission of Antoine Thomas and the Society of Jesus, as well as the later Scheut Mission during the time of the Boxer Rebellion. The images China had of the Low Countries, and vice versa, are explored. A final section includes papers on Belgian-Chinese political and economic relations, dealing with such topics as treaties conducted under Kings Leopold I and II, Belgian commercial investment in Chinese rail, and Chinese students in Belgium. The bulk of the book is in English, but two contributions are presented in French. Distributed in the US by Coronet Books. Annotation : 2004 Book News,"@en | |
