schema:abstract ""Due to the cultural differences, China and Europe differ greatly in their attitude towards 'original' and 'copy'. Using this as a starting point, curator Hans De Wolf explored issues such as 'master' and 'duplication'. After a brief introduction of Duchamp's life experiences, Hans De Wolf turned the focus of the discussion to Duchamp's artistic concept--creating an outstanding artwork needs a primitive impulse, right timing and an appropriate idea, which is how art starts. 'Master', 'mould' and 'copy room' are three key notions covered in this exhibition. China and Europe took an entirely different attitude to masters within their artistic traditions. According to Chinese tradition, the product of a master is usually in the form of a scroll and preserved in a wooden box. Copying and imitating masters' works is a way to learn from masters. However, in Western culture, a master is a great existence, and the artworks are the symbol of power and wealth. Each artwork is unique and one of a kind. It engendered the different attitudes of China and the West towards replicas. Hans De Wolf thus could show in the exhibition that there is no significant conflict existed in this cognitive differences. It was not right to consider the European continent as the birthplace of original works and ideas while China as a large copy factory. The main issue of Master Mould and Copy Room is to indicate that the work of an artist is not only to copy nature or make a sculpture, draw a picture but also to put more emphasis on its thought and idea."-- CAFA Art Museum website."@en
