| schema:abstract | ""Lilla Cabot Perry began her art studies in the twilight of a century but the dawn of a new age. As art was about to expand her outlook, technology was about to unalterably transform the shape and character of American life. Perry's first art class came ten years after Alexander Graham Bell's first successful telephone message. His move would release us from the tether of time and distance. Hers would place her in the vortex of artistic and cultural change that would upend the traditional order. Born into a patrician family firmly rooted in its past, Perry nonetheless emerged as a stalwart modernist in the arts. It is on that facet of her life that this exhibition centers. Her proper Boston upbringing is evidenced in works that adhere to the academic style. Yet her openness to change erupts in Impressionist detail and the unusual perspectives of Japanese art. Like her art, Perry's life was multifaceted. A magnet for the artistic and literary lights of her time, she is perhaps best known for her friendship with Claude Monet, one of the most dedicated of the French Impressionists. Monet's influence is revealed not only in Perry's work but also in her published reminiscences of the summers she spent at Giverny, which are an integral part of this catalogue. They are meant to color this collection, not overshadow it, however. This exhibition, after all, serves to illuminate the gift of a group too often overlooked. In sponsoring the work of women artists, the people of AT&T hope to help all of us gain a clearer perspective on the role women have and will play in the arts."-- Foreword (page 9)."@en |
