schema:abstract ""The dominant theme in Bastiaans' work is that of the human body--not in the humanistic sense of the seat of the autonomous individual, but in the sense of Foucault's subjugated body or Deleuze's 'flayed body', the body without its protective skin, situated somewhere in Anthony Vidler's 'panic space'. Bastiaans' endows the body with an infinitude of connotations and associations, represented time and again in all kinds of transformations. He confronts us with the colonial body, the transsexual and adolescent body, the dissected body, the body as wound, as war machine and as commodity, that appears in images linked to the themes of war, displacement and the global market. Bastiaans' work could sustain the words of Karl Marx as its motto: Capital feeds on the energy of people as if it were the devil in person. He summarises the dismay this arouses in a single concept: Hurt Models. Hurt Models are, for example, the drawings and collages with depictions of organs lying open. They suggest an affinity on the part of the artist with similar themes in Surrealism, especially with the theme of the human being as automaton. Hurt Models are also the Transsexual Madonnas (In the Year of the Plague), photos of adolescent Thai transsexuals dressed by Bastiaans' in white, transparent robes of gauze bandage. Or the figures in the two works in textile, Lazaret I and Lazaret II. A Hurt Model is the video Clown Mercenary of a child dressed in white gauze bandage. Or Shakespeare's King Lear that Bastiaans brings to life in performances with homeless, aged and psychiatric patients. And finally there are the real Hurt Models, the sculptures inspired by the crazy, wildly fashionably cross-dressing of the most dangerous, deadly and abused children in the history of modern total war-fare: the kid soldiers."-- Page 13."@en
