schema:abstract ""Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, and while based in Paris, he pursued a career as an artist from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Vallotton is known as a member of the Nabis, an avant-garde art group, but he also made a huge impact both in France and Europe as a whole with his monochrome woodcut prints. As an outsider (étranger) who straddling two different cultures, Swiss and French, Vallotton established a unique style in woodcuts as he fluctuating back and forth between a variety of conflicts and contradictions such as paintings and prints, men and women, and dreams and reality. Rich in satire and humor, Vallotton's perspective and design sensibility, distinguished by a skillful manipulation of the contrast between black and white, remain just as fresh today as they did then. The Mitsubishi. Ichigokan Museum contains one of the world's leading collections of Vallotton's prints, numbering some 180 works. This exhibition, a comprehensive selection of Vallotton's works, including his most notable series, introduces the manifold charms of the artist's printmaking. In addition, we present prints by other Nabi artists from the museum collection as well as an exhibit comparing the works of Vallotton and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, which was made possible through the special cooperation of the Muse Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi, France. While conveying the conditions of the era's Parisian art scene, the exhibition also sheds light on Vallotton's individuality."-- Foreword."@en
