""De Deense kunstenaars die aan de Cobra-beweging (1948-1951) deelnemen zijn 10 à 15 jaar ouder dan hun Nederlandse en Belgische collega’s. Zij hebben in de jaren 30 en 40 al een intensieve artistieke ontwikkeling doorgemaakt, die later onmiskenbaar Cobra heeft beïnvloed en daarmee van groot belang is voor de Nederlandse naoorlogse beeldende kunst. Hieraan is in Nederland niet eerder aandacht besteed. Met het Deense tentoonstellings-drieluik opent het Cobra Museum voor Moderne Kunst het jubileumjaar 2023, dat in het teken staat van de oprichting van de Cobra-beweging – 75 jaar geleden. Wij kussen de aarde, Deense moderne kunst 1934-1948 laat de artistieke ontwikkelingen in de Deense moderne kunst zien in de jaren voor, tijdens en direct na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, tot aan de oprichting van Cobra. Belangrijke thema’s zijn seksuele vrijheid, politiek, provocatie, experiment en spontaniteit. De speciale focus ligt op het kunstenaarscollectief Helhesten en het gelijknamige tijdschrift. Het kunstenaarskoppel Ernest Mancoba (Zuid-Afrika) & Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (Denemarken) is betrokken bij Cobra in Denemarken. Hun interraciale relatie is uniek voor die tijd. In Je est un autre wordt getoond hoe zij elkaar onbewust hebben beïnvloed in hun kunst. Becoming Ovartaci vormt het laatste deel van het Deense drieluik. Ovartaci – geboren als Louis Marcussen – brengt het grootste gedeelte van haar leven door in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis. We kiss the earth: Danish Modern Art, 1934-1948 The anniversary year of Cobra 75 kicks off with a triptych of Danish modern art. The Danish artists who founded Cobra in 1948 had a great influence on the much younger Dutch and Belgian Cobra members. Developments in Danish modern art from the 1930s and 1940s take centre stage with themes such as sexual freedom, politics, provocation, experimentation and spontaneity. These developments would later have such a profound influence on Cobra. This is the first large survey outside Denmark that presents around 100 masterpieces by more than 25 artists. Becoming Ovartaci Ovartaci’s intriguing work forms the final part of the Danish triptych. Ovartaci – born Louis Marcussen – spent most of her life in a psychiatric hospital. Transformation is the central theme in her life and work.
