He is regarded as an imitator of Grünewalds or an of imitator Dürer without genius -- noteworthy only as a teacher of Adam Elsheimer. This distorted image will be corrected in this volume and the painting of Uffenbach re-evaluated using the oeuvre that is first presented here in its entirety. Using extensive and previously untapped sources the author reconstructs the multi-faceted biography of a German artist of the early modern period and his dedication to his studies both as a scientist and alchemist. The book fills a gap in the history of art and still insufficiently explored transitional period of the late Renaissance to Baroque.
