sdo:abstract "Nicodemus Tessin comments on the best portrait painters available in Amsterdam: Van der Plas for large portraits and Maes and Musscher for small ones. According to Tessin, the best sculptor is Bartholomeus Eggers, a pupil of Quellinus whom he had assisted in making the sculptures for the Amsterdam city hall. He notes the marble sculptures in Eggers' workshop made for the Elector of Brandenburg and the models of works already delivered. Eggers was planning to travel to Berlin in four weeks time to deliver the rest. He visits the young sculptor "De Jong", who was working on sphinxes for the King of Siam. "De Jong" shows them a cast of an antique head from the collection of the Grand Duke of Florence and a wax model of the Elector of Brandenburg on horseback with four putti representing the winds of the world on the corners. He visits Welhelm de Goniar on the Prinsengracht, who has the best mill to cut and polish marble."
