The author of the travel description, Orazio Busino, describes the tavern: the floors are covered in white sand, a Dutch custom to keep them dry, and the rooms are decorated with paintings, mirrors, antlers and cabinets topped with vases. He notes the use of fireplaces and the wind mills. The next afternoon at 13u they embark in a horse-drawn uncovered cart towards Amsterdam; meanwhile their luggage and servants embark a boat to Dordrecht. Busino describes the countryside. They stop in Rhenen at 18u for a meal, and arrive at the Utrecht gates at 1u. They tip the guards, who advise them to follow the walls on the outside of the city on foot to reach the boats. After a sober meal, they embark an uncovered boat to Amsterdam." |
