The travel party visits the city hall, and the author praises its structure. From there, they discover the perfect situation of the city and the beauty of the country, with the many surrounding waters. The bailiff of Vlissingen kisses the hands of Correr with no great courtesy. Correr's party continues to Middelburg. The author comments on the small roads, fit for pedestrians but too small for the wagons, and the fertile land. In Middelburg it was the time of Kermis or annual fair: eight days in which foreign merchants could sell their goods without restrictions and the burghers and bourgeoisie were drinking and eating together. They see a showcase of 6 company's of 100 infantrymen, some with muskets, others with arches, bards and pikes." |
