| sdo:abstract | "The Uffenbach brothers are in Amsterdam at Visscher's shop. De Leth shows them a folding screen to be placed around the bed in the children's room, which he had painted by De Lairesse with the scene of Abraham being promised a son and Sarah overhearing it and laughing. It is one of the last paintings De Lairesse made before he got blind. De Leth tells them he was offered 3,000 guilders for it. The afternoon, the brothers visit the art dealer Christian Rademaker. Uffenbach comments on his large stock including many ordinary and bad paintings, although several were beautiful. The best were seven small pieces of 1.5 foot tall by Rubens depicting the Seven Deadly Sins and a Descent from the cross by Van Dyck. The next morning the brothers visit De Hahn to see his shells and other naturalia, but they are told he just started collecting. Uffenbach suspects because he knew they had seen Ten Kate's collection." |
