"In Amsterdam, Müller, along with other VOC recruits, are called to load their luggage onto a light ship and to go to the Oostindisch Huis afterwards to drop the rest of their luggage. In the Oostindisch Huis, the recruits are counted, divided into different companies and lead to the ship, followed by a sorrowing crowd, some of them following on boat. They arrive near Texel, but stay at anchor because the ship lacks wood and fresh water. However, they enjoy plenty of beer, bread, cheese, meat and butter, but it seems to him like a man's last meal before being hanged. He explains that he got a little drunk."
