"In Leiden, Müller learns that he could have occasion to go to the East Indies. He takes his leave of his master under the pretext of having left clothes behind. In Amsterdam, he explains how volunteers are called to enroll for the East Indies. Müller describes his excitement at the idea of being rich already. He goes to the Oostindisch Huis, but all the positions as officer are taken. He stills finds employment as midshipman. After he states his identity, he is given money, and the company officials wish him good luck."
