"The Uffenbach brothers are in Rotterdam, visiting the son of painter Govert Flinck. Because of the dark weather they have trouble viewing the other paintings. Uffenbach comments on the ceiling in the small room being very well painted by Van der Werff. Flinck tells them that he used to have a large collection of engravings but that his attention switched to drawings, because they constitute the first ideas of the painters. The Uffenbach brothers have no time to study his large collection of drawings, because they have an appointment with Van Alckemade. Van Alckemade shows him a volume containing historical documents."
