He then notices several roofs with cannon balls on them from the time of the 1672 siege, and describes in detail the city gate and the inscription commemorating the event. He then recalls trying to enlist with the cavalry as soon as he arrived in the city, but failing to do so because the company does not need more men. He goes back to Zwolle and enlists with the Göttingen infantry, on the condition that he could quit whenever he wished to do so. The occasion presents itself in October, when he learns that several ships from the United East India Company are ready for departure." |
