"Adulterated cinnabar. If you want a medium, pleasing red color, where you can hardly tell whether it is vermilion or minium, take four pound of red lead for every pound of vermilion and rub it together well on the stone. Temper it with light parchment glue. When the cinnabar gets tough, add three or four drops of vinegar or add salt, this will cleanse it. If it wants to get too brown or dark, rub ammonia well and add it, then it cleans itself."
