Take some gypsum – well powdered, of the sort that painters use –the same amount again of Armenian bole and of solid sugar if the weather is wet (if it is dry take a little more). Grind all these ingredients together adding water mixed with good isinglass if you can find some; if not, just use the common type, but leave it to soak in clear water for a day and a night before adding to the mix. Take a pinch of good-quality saffron and dissolve in water until the water is well coloured. While grinding (//f.233r) you will pour this water one drop at a time, the same way that you did with the isinglass water. Once everything is well mixed into a kind of mud, put inside a shell, add egg white and mix well. Now you can use it to write whatever you want. Once you have outlined the letters, let the gold leaf dry, and scrape gently with a knife until the body is evened out. That way you can apply your gold, God willing. And I tell you that all I am saying is true because I tried it myself." |
