"Describing the history of Amsterdam, Hegenitius remembers Gilbert Amstelius, Lord of Amstel, who first fortified the city, building towers and walls in fourteenth century. From then on, the trade and the population never stopped flourishing, making Amsterdam the main city of Holland to date. Hegenitius lists then some public monuments, starting with the old church (Oude Kerk) and reads the epitaph of the explorer Jacob van Heemskerk (1567-1607)."
