In zijn studententijd (Beets studeerde theologie) schreef hij romantische gedichten en vormde met andere studenten een letterkundige club. In 1840 werd hij predikant in Heemstede. In 1854 werd hij beroepen naar Utrecht. Van 1874 tot 1884 was hij hoogleraar in de kerkgeschiedenis aan de Rijksuniversiteit van Utrecht. Van zijn hand verschenen niet alleen christelijke volksgedichten, maar ook literaire en theologische artikelen en enkele prekenbundels. Zijn bekendste werk is 'Camera Obscura', een bundel humoristische verhalen die hij als student schreef onder het pseudoniem Hildebrand."@nl ;
