Montorsoli produced the work at a key phase in his career--around the time he restored the ancient Apollo Belvedere and Laocoon, and carved the figure of Saint Cosmas for the Medici Chapel. Montorsoli's work thus responds to Michelangelo and the classical post, while reflecting the shifting political conditions in Florence and the Holy Roman Empire.
