Then take  your  glue, which should  be made from the  gelatinous  parts of a buil, and mix with it an equal quantity of white of egg, and temper  the gypsum with this mixture.  And w herever  you wish to lay the gold, spread  some of this gypsum with a brush and leave it to dry.   Do this three times, and then scrape  it smooth,  and  burnish  it.  Then  lay some of the  glue upon  it,  and on that  lay the  gold, pressing it down gently  with  a bit  of cotton: and  so set it aside to dry.   And if you wish to polish it, polish it with a bloodstone or with  a dog's tooth." ;
